Episode 63: The Other Side of the Gate

The second to the last episode. WAAH. FMA ends tomorrow :(
But as they say, when something ends, something new starts. And so, I will be picking up Kuroshitsuji II, especially that Sebastian and Ciel are CONFIRMED to be back on the series.
This post starts my operation clear-all-backlog-to-start-blogging-more-about-Kuroshitsuji II.
But nonetheless, Ep63 of FMA is really awesome!

Ed continues to throw some punches to Father and it is clear that Father is about to reach his end. He has having a hard time containing God with his depleting supply of Philosopher's Stone, that he again let out another energy blast. Amidst the confusion, Father uses this chance to stab Greed and absorb his stone.

Ling tries to stop Greed's soul from being sucked but he too, is being pulled towards Father. Greed warns him not to do but still Ling wants to save Greed. To save Ling, Greed says his first and last lie, that he will fight alongside with Ling and together, they can become the Emperor of Xing. But this is all just a bluff as he breaks the connection and gets sucked by Father. As his last act, Greed calls for Lan Fan to sever Father's arms with her automail.

Ling gets control of his body and his Ouroboros tattoo disappeared. However, Greed's absorption doesn't mean that Father is saved. Greed struggled and began transmuting his body to the weakest form of charcoal, thanks to his carbonization ability. Because of his rebellion, Father decides to kill Greed for good, but Ed used this chance to punch Father in the chest.

Greed died with satisfaction because he finally had friends, in the person of Ed and Ling. Even though they started rough at first and he didn't gave them the respect and treatment they deserved, Ed and Ling accepted him and considered him as their friend. He died without regret. His finals words are: "Ahh... it's enough. I don't need anything else. Gahaha... see ya. Friends... of my soul."

While Father is preoccupied with Greed, Ed used this chance to punch Father in the chest. Since he has a charcoal body, a hole was formed and from there, the soul of the people of Xerxes became free. At the same time, black hands emerged and pulls Father to the Gate to face Truth. At the Gate, Father is transformed to his original form, a sphere, and there he met Truth in the same form as him. The two had a conversation where Truth mocks Father's desire to attain everything. In the end, Father is sucked by the Gate and he became part of the unending abyss inside.

Back in the real world, everybody is celebrating for defeating Father but Ed is not so happy. Al sacrificed himself and he wants to bring back his brother. Ling offers Lan Fan's Philosopher's stone but Ed declines because of their promise. Hoenheim offers his final life to bring back Al, in an attempt to do some fatherly but still, Ed declines. For the first time, Ed called Hoenheim father.

Looking at everyone, Ed realizes something and draws the human transmutation circle. Declaring that this will be his final act as the Fullmetal Alchemist, he once again enters the gate and faced Truth. At the Gate, Truth asked for the payment to get back Al and Ed sacrificed his alchemy, his own Gate of Truth and that could mean that he can never use alchemy once again. Truth is surprised that Ed is willing to let go of this, but Ed doesn't worry at all since he still has friends to support him.

Truth smiles and admit defeat from Ed's reasoning. He is then lead to Al and the brothers are once again reunited.

Back at the real world, Al wakes up to see a crying May Chang, his father, Ed and everyone else. Later, Ed hands the fetus Selim to Mrs. Bradley and at the same time, Radio Capital announced in public the whole plan and that the mastermind are the higher ups of the military. They also say that in the middle of everything, Fuhrer President and his son Selim, lost their lives.

Back at Central, Hoenheim reflects about Father when Alex greeted him, thanking him for his sons because without them, Amestris is long gone. An emotional and teary-eyed Hoenheim leaves Central as he goes back to Resembool, to visit Trisha's grave.

Hoenheim is so proud of his sons and would want to continue living his life. But next morning, Pinako found Hoenheim, dead, but with a smile on his face.

  1. I found this episode quite emotional. I also liked how they adapted the ending to suit Hoenheim.

I almost felt sorry for Father. Almost. Okay, maybe a little...

I was like "YEESSS!" When Edward preformed transmutation to save his brother, bonus for getting to keep all his body parts. I found it pretty clever. Awaiting the end to this brilliant series!

  2. It's really emotional because Hoenheim died and at the same time, Ed sacrificed his alchemy for Al. So a lot of emotions coming through.

And Selim was given back to his mom, so another emotional moment :)
